Research has found that Americans often respect individual billionaires, like Bill Gates or Oprah Winfrey, and how they became rich. At the same time, however, they have problems with the richest "top 1%" as a group.
Researchers looked at eight related studies of 2,800 Americans' opinions on wealth, and who has it.
The studies had participants think about wealth in different ways. For example, some participants were given information about one billionaire, including how they made their money, while others were given similar information about a group of billionaires.

Another group learned about how much more money CEOs were making compared to average workers, with some participants focusing on just one company CEO, while others learned about the CEOs of many companies.

In general, Americans had fewer problems with how much money one very rich person had, but thought it was unfair that rich people as a group had so much wealth.

Study co-author Jesse Walker from The Ohio State University explained that when considering a group with a lot of money, people question the economic system. But when people look at just one successful person, they tend to think of that person as being a hard worker who deserves their money.
The 732 billionaires in the US are only a very small part of the country's "top 1%." According to data from 2020 shared by the Pew Research Center, the 1.4 million people in the country's top 1% only made an average of about $1.7 million — but this was still 20 times the average American income.
