Tears of joy, also known as the laughing-crying face, is the most-used emoji of 2021, accounting for more than 5% of all the emoji we use, according to a new report. The red heart emoji is in second place, and rolling on the floor laughing is third, according to data from the Unicode Consortium, the organization that decides which emoji are available to use on our phones and devices. Country flags are the least used emoji, even though they're the largest collection, accounting for 258 of the 3,663 emoji available for use.

But has the COVID-19 pandemic changed how we use emoji? The answer is "just a little." Nine out of the 10 emojis we most use now were also in the top 10 in 2019. The only emoji that was in the top 10 in 2019, but didn't get in this year, was the double-heart emoji. The smiling face with hearts — hearts on the outside, not in the eyes — entered the top 10 instead.

The syringe emoji is, however, being used more often. It's number 193 on the list this year, compared to 282 in 2019. The microbe is also now at 477, rising from 1,086 in 2019. Lauren Gawne, who researches emoji use at La Trobe University in Australia, told The New York Times that, even though we use the microbe emoji a bit more, we still spent a lot of our time wishing each other happy birthday or laughing and asking each other how we are — positive feelings that will be nice to keep sharing as we move into 2022.
