Israel's Tel Aviv has been named the world's most expensive city after taking the top position from Paris — which now shares second place with Singapore. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Worldwide Cost of Living 2021 report says that Tel Aviv rose from fifth place in 2020 to become the most expensive city to live in. The EIU's cost of living report is based on a survey done twice a year of more than 400 prices across over 200 products and services in 173 cities. The 2021 research found that the prices of goods and services rose around the world by an average of 3.5% in local currencies, compared with 1.9% in 2020.

The other most expensive cities in the world are Zurich in Switzerland, Hong Kong and New York. Switzerland has another city in seventh place with Geneva, while Copenhagen, Los Angeles, and Osaka completed the list of the 10 most expensive cities. The report says that the cost of living has risen in Tel Aviv because of the strength of the Israeli shekel against the US dollar, and increases in grocery and transport costs. Property prices aren't included in the data, but the EIU says that these have risen in Tel Aviv too.
