Special Effects: The man behind South Korea's most notable apocalyptic zombie movies and TV shows

Hwang Hyo-Kyun's job is to deceive people. If the audience notices his work, it means he's done a worse job. He said in an interview "The fact that we can get an audience to be convinced by its realism and focus on the story ... (that's) what makes special effects so cool." Working on special effects is his job and has worked for hundreds of films and televisions shows. Most of them are some popular movies in South Korea, eg. "Train to Busan" (부산행) and the 2020 sequel "Peninsula" (반도) as well the award-winning shows "Okja" (옥자) and "Parasite" (기생충).
Hwang's latest effects achievement is seen through Netflix's popular Korean TV series "Kingdom" (킹덤). This was the show that he believed launched his CELL team to become famous in special effects. The series actually aired in 2019 and this year's installment featured Jun Ji-Hyun, one of the well-known actors in South Korea. Together with his CELL team, they have worked hard with the show's creator to come up with a particular concept for a Korean period zombie drama. Creativity is essential since the period drama will need a lot of details to show the audience.

That level of detail means more time in the makeup room, especially for the zombies requiring more close-up shots. For example, a team of 10 people worked on the king's makeup for around three hours every day. For more "average" zombies, requiring just the addition of wounds and rotting skin, it took the team about an hour.
There's pressure though, according to Hwang. As televisions get larger and resolutions get higher, for him, even the smallest mistakes become more obvious. He gives the example of attaching artificial skin: "If you can see the edge of it, then it shows that it's fake and it will distract the audience," he said. "We always carry the burden ... to make it perfect."

"Now when I tell people that I was on the special effects makeup team for 'Train to Busan' and 'Kingdom,' I don't feel the need to work for Hollywood movies to realize my dream anymore," he said. "I feel rewarded."
