Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram Go Offline for Six Hours

Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are back online after a global outage on October 4 took the services down for six hours.

In a statement, Facebook said the outage was caused by changes to routers that manage its network traffic between data centers. The company said the changes temporarily stopped communication between data centers, which had a knock-on effect that took its services offline.

Facebook said there was no evidence of any security issues around user data. There was also nothing to suggest that the outage was an attack.

As well as website and app issues, there were also reports that employees at the company's Menlo Park, California campus had trouble entering buildings because the outage had stopped their electronic security badges from working.

But the impact was far worse for many of Facebook's nearly 3 billion users, showing just how much the world has come to rely on it for everything from running businesses to simply ordering food.

It also showed that despite the presence of other social media platforms, nothing can easily replace the network that over the past 17 years has become a critical infrastructure.

Facebook was already in the midst of another crisis after whistleblower Frances Haugen, a former Facebook product manager, provided The Wall Street Journal with internal documents that showed the company is aware of the harms caused by its products and decisions.

Haugen also filed complaints with federal law enforcement alleging Facebook's own research shows how it increases hate and misinformation and also leads to increased polarization. It also showed that the company was aware that Instagram can harm teenage girls' mental health.
