Australia's national airline Qantas has set two company records after one of its planes traveled from Buenos Aires to the Australian city of Darwin in a single flight. The plane flew for 17 hours and 25 minutes without stopping, for a total distance of 15,020 kilometers. In doing so, the company broke its records for the longest distance and longest time in the air for one of its commercial flights.

The plane used to break the record was a Boeing 787-9 named "Great Barrier Reef." It carried 107 passengers, as well as four pilots who took turns flying the plane, and 17 other airline employees. It left Argentina on October 5 and landed in Australia on October 6. The flight was part of an effort to bring Australian citizens back to their home country during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March 2020, Qantas says it has brought citizens back from 31 different places, including 19 that the airline does not fly to commercially.

Qantas' old record for longest time and distance for a commercial flight was a 16 hour and 45-minute flight between London, England, and Perth, Australia, which traveled just under 14,500 kilometers. Unlike the company's new record-breaking flight, which only flew once, this was a regularly scheduled journey. 

The longest flight ever by a commercial airplane was done in November 2005, when a Boeing 777-200LR flew 21,602 kilometers from Hong Kong to London. The flight took 22 hours and 42 minutes, but the plane only carried 35 people, including eight pilots as well as journalists and Boeing engineers.
