Survey: 95% of Young People Worry About Climate Change

Climate change is having a negative effect on the mental health of young people around the world, a new study has found.

Published in The Lancet Planetary Health, the study surveyed 10,000 young people aged 16-25 from 10 different countries, including Australia, Brazil, Nigeria, the Philippines, the UK, and the US.

Participants were asked about their feelings on climate change, and also gave their opinions on how their governments were addressing it.

Ninety-five percent said they were at least a little worried about climate change, with nearly 60% saying they were "very" or "extremely" worried. Only 5% said they weren't worried at all.

When asked if climate change made them feel sad, anxious, afraid, angry, powerless, helpless, or guilty, more than half of young people said yes to each one. Over 45% said their feelings about climate change negatively affected their daily life.

The survey also revealed that most young people do not have positive feelings about their own futures as a result of what is happening to the environment. More than 50% believe the things they value most will be destroyed, and that humanity is doomed.

Most of the participants had a negative view of governments' response to climate change as well. Nearly 65% said governments are not doing enough to prevent a climate catastrophe, and about the same percentage said governments are lying about the effectiveness of the actions they are taking and failing young people around the world.

The researchers said they were shocked by the emotional and psychological effects climate change is having on the world's youth. They wrote that the results are "a warning to governments and adults around the world," and underscore the need to both respond better to young people's concerns and take more immediate action on climate change.
